Carol of Lights
The City added a new event to our already popular Christmas activities agenda, which we are absolutely certain will become another favorite Holiday tradition – Opelika’s first “Carol of Lights. This special event took place along South Railroad Avenue in historic downtown Opelika, and featured a combined community choir of celebrating the Christmas / Advent season through music and lights. Although we started out "small" this year, the plans are to make this nothing less than a spectacular event of lights and music and community fellowship!
Below are pictures from Opelika's first "Carol of Lights."
Dr. Michael Marcades, Minister of Music at Opelika's First United Methodist Church, directed the music for the event, which included an interdenominational community choir and a brass quartet from the Opelika High School band.
Left: A good crowd of folks showed up for the event.
Right: Mayor Gary Fuller greets everyone and thanks all those who helped make this year's event such a success!
Left: Opelika Main Street Director, Velinda Wheeles, greets everyone and runs down the list of Christmas activities planned for the community.
The festival concluded with the "official lighting" of Opelika's Christmas tree. In the picture on the right are four girls from a family that had literally moved into the community just that afternoon, and had come to enjoy the festivities.
