- Never touch a power line or any wire - even one - that is on the ground.
- Stay away from any vehicle (i.e. car, truck, van, etc) if a power line or any wire
is touching it.
- If a power line touches your vehicle while you are inside, remain calm and follow these directions:
- If you can do safely, stay inside the vehicle until emergency assistance arrives.
- Warn others to stay away from the vehicle and have them call Opelika Light and Power at 705-5570.
- If you must get out of the vehicle for safety reasons, jump clear. Do not touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time.
- Never make contact with overhead power lines when you are working on a roof, trimming trees, installing or removing an antenna or satellite dish, using or carrying a metal ladder, moving a boat with a mast, etc.
- Never remove anything caught in or touching power lines --not even a pet or any other animal.
- Never fly or allow children to fly kites or metallic balloons near power lines. If your kite or balloon gets caught in a power line, call Opelika Light and Power at 705-5570.
- Call before you dig. Call Alabama One Call at 1-800-292-8525 for underground line location before digging.
- Keep your yard well lit at night to discourage intruders and keeps you from running into objects.
- Never climb trees or allow children to climb trees that have power lines running through them.
- Be alert to signs of electrical problems in your home or business, such as flickering lights.
- Be sure that all electrical outlets and wall switches have cover plates.
- Put plastic safety caps in all unused wall outlets.
- Never remove the third prong from a three-pronged plug.
- Repair or replace damaged or brittle electrical cords.
- avoid damaging electrical cords, remove them from outlets by pulling the plug and not the cord.
