KeyShawn Shaw

Mayor Gary Fuller and the Opelika City Council honored 8th Grader KeyShawn Shaw of the Opelika Middle School at the February 19th meeting of the Opelika City Council for winning the 2013 Lee County Spelling Bee. The Mayor presented KeyShawn with a "Certificate of Congratulations" for his outstanding accomplishment and wished him every success as he next competes for the Alabama State Spelling Bee championship on March 9th in Birmingham .

KeyShawn won the 2013 Lee County Spelling Bee title by correctly spelling "alchemy", beating out a field of 23 spellers representing schools across the county.  His win marked the fourth consecutive year that a student from the Opelika City Schools has advanced to the State spelling bee.  (Kevin Lazenby won the competition three years in a row.)

With him at the Opelika City Council recognition was his mother, Lasaua Young, and his 4 year old sister Jakayla.
