Economic Development Recognized for Efforts at October 20th City Council Meeting

At the October 20, 2009 City Council Meeting, Opelika's Economic Development was recognized and presented with the award, naming the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park as an "AdvantageSite."  Presenting the recognition plaque were Tammy Radmard with EDPA and Gary Faulkner with ADO.  Accepting the award was OED's Alison Mueller, who is the Existing Business/Workforce Development Coordinator.

A 150-acre parcel of the 2,000-acre Northeast Opelika Industrial Park has received AdvantageSite designation.

The AdvantageSite program requires that community economic development organizations provide documentation specific to a proposed industrial site, including a set of standard data related to ownership/control, environmental and geotechnical conditions, and infrastructure status.

Sites must also meet size, zoning and accessibility requirements.

“Having Northeast Opelika Industrial Park designated as an Advantage Site further attests to the quality of our assets here in Opelika,” said Al Cook, director of the City of Opelika Economic Development Department. “We are ready for new business!”

“The designation of the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park site adds another quality site to the growing inventory of Alabama AdvantageSites. The volume of sites in various stages of the AdvantageSite application process continues to increase,” said Greg Knighton, Economic Development Partnership of Alabama vice president and director of business information. “I would like to thank the City of Opelika for its commitment to excellence.”

The AdvantageSite program is jointly sponsored by the Alabama Development Office, Alabama Gas Corporation, Alabama Power Company, EDPA, the North Alabama Industrial Development Association and PowerSouth Energy Cooperative.

The voluntary industrial site preparedness program was created in order to make the state more competitive for companies considering a location in Alabama.
