Christmas in OpelikaThe following are special and annual events held in Opelika each year:

Christmas in Opelika is a special time as people from all walks of life come together to celebrate the holiday season in ways that are bringing national attention to the city. The season officially opens with the Annual Christmas Parade held on the streets of Historic Downtown Opelika and sponsored by the Opelika Chamber of Commerce. The Living Christmas Tree is an event of First Baptist Church of Opelika and the Collinwood Subdivision shares the season with visitors to its annual Luminaries Tour held one night each holiday season.

Of special note is a weekend of historical holiday celebration that features the annual Victorian Front Porch Christmas Tour and the Christmas In A Railroad Town events.

Visitors to the annual four-day Victorian Front Porch Tour may walk or drive through the North Opelika Historic Neighborhood, where families lavishly decorate their elegant, restored Victorian homes for the Christmas season and dress in period costume. The event, which has captured national attention and draws up to 10,000 visitors each year, brings the neighborhood to life in full Victorian dress and features Old World decorations that include life-size Santas, carousel horses and other figures designed by local artist Jan Jones. Admission is free and you can drive through the tour, except on Saturday when the streets are closed to cars so that carolers and other entertainment may be provided. For more information, contact the Auburn-Opelika Visitors and Convention Bureau at 887-8747.

Christmas In A Railroad Town, held on the same December weekend with the Victorian Front Porch Tour, transforms Railroad Avenue in Historic Downtown Opelika into a Christmas wonderland and festival. Treats for children include rides on a miniature train and time with Santa and Mrs. Claus as everyone enjoys live music, hot wassail and a variety of holiday treats.

The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. along Railroad Avenue. For more information, contact Opelika Main Street, Inc. at 334-745-0466 or the Opelika Chamber of Commerce at 745-4861.

Summer Swing Concert Series -- Co-sponsored by the Opelika Parks and Recreation Department and the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, the Summer Swing Concert Series is held every Tuesday evening for 13 weeks at Opelika's Municipal Park on Denson Drive. Families sit on the creek bank in chairs and on blankets, enjoying a varied schedule of musical groups who perform from the park's Bandstand. A menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks are served at a low cost from a quaint concession cabin.

Opelika's Dogwood and Azalea Trail, sponsored each spring by the Opelika Jaycees, attracts visitors from miles away to enjoy the beauty of Opelika's historic and modern neighborhoods as they blossom with the many colors of Southern Azaleas and Dogwood trees. This seasonal event is timed by nature itself, so keep your eyes open for the Dogwood and Azalea Trail signs directing travelers through the city.

Fourth of July Celebration -- Sponsored by Opelika Parks and Recreation, this annual Independence Day celebration attracts kids of all ages to a major fireworks display and live entertainment at the Opelika High School Baseball Field.
