Camp Good GriefOn Saturday May 1st 140 local children, age 5-17, who had experienced the loss of a loved one through death, attended Camp Good Grief at the Opelika SportsPlex. Coordinators Jenny Filush and Valeri White along with over 60 volunteers including the AU Women's Gymnastic Team helped make a special day for all the campers. The kids learned ways to heal “mind, body, and soul” with activities designed so that the campers could share with their group answers to different questions about their losses. The campers then planted a plant to take home, signed a banner, made a quilt square, and made “race cards” in memory of their loved one…to see so many “walking in memory of…” Mommy, Daddy, etc and their notes to them was so powerful! The lights in the gym were turned out and the kids got glow sticks and walked in silence.Lunch in the amphitheatre included Auburn football players, Aubie, and the women’s basketball team. A 'Balloon Release' in memory of loved ones completed the day.
